City of London Festival: Opening Event

Sunday 24 June, 12.45pm – 4.00pm

A gleaming musical marathon is presented for the Festival opening on Sunday 24 June with 300 free piano lessons at 50 Golden Street Pianos. This will be launched by one of pop music’s greatest vocalists, Spandau Ballet legend Tony Hadley, who will perform some memorable hits accompanied by some of the country’s best young musicians from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Make sure you’re at the Golden Street Piano on the north side of Millennium Bridge from 12.45pm on Sunday 24 June to catch this special one-off performance! Then drop in at any piano from 1.00pm – 4.00pm on Sunday 24 June to sign up for a free lesson.

A new duet created by Rafael Bonachela especially for the City of London Festival’s 50 Golden Street Pianos is presented by Sydney Dance Company.  Two dancers emerge, rendezvous and disappear against a dramatic and ever-changing London backdrop, set to solo piano composed and played by Mercury prize-nominated Gwilym Simcock.  A magical open-air performance by one of Australia’s most exciting companies.

Four primary schools present pop-up concerts with an inter-continental theme to tour around the street pianos. Through the City of London Festival’s education programme, workshops have been delivered in schools during the spring and summer terms exploring folk, gospel and popular songs from Africa, South America, Europe and Asia, along with some London favourites. The results are presented in the outdoors for all to enjoy. Participating schools: Michael Faraday Primary School, Raines Foundation School, Sir John Cass Primary School, Shapla Primary School.
