Arbury Court
Opening hours: 8.30am-8.00pm. Boe is a member of the Blight Society. His design for this piano is inspired by a nightmare he had as a child about a monster in his bedroom wardrobe.
But in the end they played together - produced by Cambridge University!

Report this commentThe English Overdamper built in the 20's and 30's was not a nice piano. It was never supposed to be. It was a built to a price for people who could only play the piano a little bit but wanted a nice piece of furniture. There are still thousands of them and piano technicians advise against buying them. HOWEVER.....Today was the first time I have seen the pianos after they have spent a week on the streets exposed to the elements. By a mile, the pianos that had survived the best were the English straight strung overdampers. The "Berry" in Arbury Court still worked a treat ! Yes it sounds a bit honky tonky but that is how it will always have sounded. So the English straight strung overdamper piano finally has a use. A useful discovery for future playmeimyours events. No need to put decent pianos out in the rain. These old Straight strungs it seems are indestructible.

Report this commentFantastic idea!
My 2-year-old had a go on the Arbury Court piano this morning. At first she just pressed all the black keys in order - I think she thought the white ones were just what they were mounted in. I showed her the white keys played notes too, but she still preferred pressing the black ones.
