   6.45am, Saturday 17 January
   Came into the city early; was wondering about the feeling of playing a piano surrounded by high-rise buildings; mind-images of notes bouncing off the glass and concrete ... in reality, I had backing support from a chorus of angle-grinders with a bass continuo of cooling towers and the everpresent city rumble.
   
   A bit of ragtime felt right for the piano, keys sticky from Friday night revellers no doubt; unfortunately my fingers were stickier than the keys! Around me, the cleaners kept cleaning; behind me, the masons kept working on the paving.
