I had heard about this piano display last summer when it hit New York. Two weeks ago I was taking a morning walk along the Colorado River in Austin, Texas, a city whose great motto is "Help Keep Austin Weird." When I rounded a bend on the trail, there in front of me was a piano at Lou Neff Point. I knew instantly what it was. And though I was in somewhat of a hurry, I could not walk on by. I sat down to play Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag and a few other favorite tunes. It never occurred to me that a small crowd might gather but one did. Their kind applause was uplifting. Then the stunning lass you see pictured here came up to me and asked if she could place her 18 month old (that very day 18 months) on my lap to give him his first lesson. The kid, little Max, was as cute as any kid I have ever seen (my own two excepted) and I did just that. Then we had a short chat and I was on my way with a wonderful memory. The piano at this point needs to stay right there until the Second Coming.
