  3. COMMUNITY ARTS CENTERS DAY AT THE OXFORD COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER

Art centers throughout the region will open their doors on Sunday, September 12 sharing music, dance, theatre, crafts, and galleries with their communities as part of Community Arts Centers Day. Twenty-six community arts centers are participating in the day’s activities. Each center will open its doors from noon to 4:00 pm with free activities for families, friends, and neighbors to enjoy.
Community Arts Centers Day celebrates the benefits of arts centers throughout the region. “On that day people all across Greater Cincinnati will have a chance to visit these wonderful neighborhood assets,” says Ruth Dickey from the Clifton Cultural Arts Center.
Community Arts Centers enliven neighborhoods throughout our region, make the tri-state area a great place to live, work, play, and visit, and provide access to a wide range of art opportunities which bring people together to share experiences and ideas; inspire children, adults, and families; and help to create vibrant and connected communities. Currently eleven cities, townships, and villages have officially proclaimed September 12, 2010 as Community Arts Centers Day.
The Oxford Community Arts Center (OCAC) has a number of things scheduled for the day. Front Porch Performances from 12:30 through 4:00 pm include the Oxford Drum & Gourd Ensemble, “Where’s Johnny” and Rohit & Oscar Menezes. Both the Oxford Drum & Gourd Ensemble and “Where’s Johnny” have performed at the Arts Center many times. Their fun and entertaining styles are miles apart, but their love and enthusiasm for the music they produce is both infectious and entertaining.
First time OCAC performers Rohit and Oscar Menezes bring a wealth of musical experience to the Center. Rohit was born in Pune, India and began sneaking into the neighbor’s basement to play their piano when he was four years old, and began taking piano lessons when he was six. Currently a music education teacher at Laurel Elementary School in Laurel Indiana and pianist at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, Rohit earned his Masters of Arts in Teaching in Music Education at Indiana University. Rohits father, Oscar Menezes was born in Belgaum, India and is an Engineer by profession, but his main passion is singing. He is a well known baritone and is at home in both a solo and choral setting. He has been involved in various local musical productions including 'My Fair Lady', 'Cats', 'She Loves Me', and 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'. Oscar's singing repertoire is vast, including music from the 1940s.
